Celebrating Nouveau Day: A Toast to Tradition and Our Third Gamay Vintage

November 2025

Every third Thursday in November, a joyful ritual unfolds across the wine world. At the stroke of midnight, bottles are uncorked, celebrations commence, and the cry echoes from Beaujolais to Portland: Le Nouveau est arrivé! Nouveau Day is here.

This year, as we craft our third vintage of Gamay Noir from our La Belle Promenade Vineyard, we find ourselves drawn deeper into this centuries-old tradition that celebrates transition – from harvest’s intensity to winter’s quiet, and the simple pleasure of gathering together.

Closeup of a Flâneur La Belle Promenade 2024 Gamay Noir botttle label

The Story of Nouveau Day

The tradition traces back to the 1800s, when Beaujolais vignerons would gather after the exhausting harvest season to toast their labors with the season’s first wine—young, vibrant, and bursting with the energy of freshly-picked grapes. What began as a local custom evolved into a global phenomenon. In 1985, the French government officially designated the third Thursday of November as the release day for Beaujolais Nouveau, transforming a regional celebration into an international moment of revelry.

The timing is serendipitous. In the United States, Nouveau Day arrives just one week before Thanksgiving, making these youthful, food-friendly wines the perfect companion to our holiday tables. It’s a celebration of gratitude, of the year’s harvest, and of the simple joy of a well-made glass of wine shared among friends.

Anthony Sereni – Director of Winemaking

Why Gamay? Why Here?

When considering what to plant at La Belle Promenade, we think about more than just varietals—we think about the conversation between vine and soil, between place and expression. Gamay Noir found its voice in our volcanic soils.

We’re honored that this dialogue has resonated beyond our estate—VinePair recently recognized our efforts by naming us among the Best Gamays from the Willamette Valley in 2024.

The Willamette Valley sits on a similar latitude as Burgundy, France—both regions blessed with that elusive quality that allows finicky, expressive grapes to thrive. While the parallel isn’t exact (we’re at 45 degrees, Burgundy slightly north), what matters more is our shared cool-climate sensibility. The maritime influence from the Pacific, our volcanic Jory soils, the interplay of warm days and cool nights—these elements create a terroir that speaks the same language as the great vineyards of France, even as it articulates something distinctly Oregonian.

Gamay thrives in this environment. At La Belle Promenade, our Gamay vines are rooted between 700 and 850 feet in elevation, where northeastern and southwestern exposures bring balance and nuance. The volcanic soils—ranging from fractured basalt to deep Saum soils—add layers of complexity to each vintage. This is terroir speaking through the grape: mineral, floral, alive.

Crafting Nouveau: The Art of Carbonic Maceration

The magic of Nouveau wines lies in their method. We employ partial carbonic maceration—a technique where whole grape clusters ferment in a sealed, carbon dioxide-rich environment. This process is a study in chemistry and intuition.

Inside each intact berry, intracellular fermentation begins without the intervention of yeast, yes, you read that right: Fermentation begins inside the berry. As the cells inside each individual grape morph, sugars and malic acid begin breaking down while synthesizing a range of aromatic compounds. It’s this esterification—the creation of fruity esters during carbonic fermentation—that gives Nouveau wines their distinctive ethereal quality. Think of those bright notes of red berries, that subtle whisper of bubble gum or kirsch, the lifted floral aromatics that seem to dance above the glass. These are the fingerprints of carbonic maceration, the signature of a wine made to be enjoyed in its exuberant youth.

Our approach is both spirited and intentional. We use 100% whole clusters, native yeast fermentation, and neutral oak to let the fruit and terroir shine through. The wine is meant to be drunk young—ideally within two years—when it’s at its most vivacious.

Flâneur Gamay Noir: A Love Letter from the Chehalem Mountains to Beaujolais

2025 marks our third Gamay vintage, and with each release, we’ve grown more confident in our understanding of how this noble grape expresses itself in our corner of the Willamette Valley.

Bright red fruit—juicy cherries and raspberries—takes center stage, complemented by earthy, mineral notes that ground the wine’s exuberance. The whole cluster fermentation and partial carbonic maceration create a playful balance of fruit and subtle tannins. It’s both spirited and profound, juicy and high-toned, with layers of vibrant red fruit punctuated by that distinctive florality that makes Gamay so compelling.

This is an easy yet sophisticated drinking wine. Light on its feet, refreshing when slightly chilled, it captures that delightful tension between elegance and approachability. It’s a wine that invites you to slow down, to wander through flavor the way a flâneur wanders through Life—with curiosity, with presence, with joy.

Nouveau Day Meets Thanksgiving: Perfect Pairings

One of the great pleasures of Nouveau wines is their versatility at the table, particularly the Thanksgiving table. The bright acidity, red fruit profile, and subtle earthy notes make Gamay a natural companion to the season’s flavors.

Turkey: Whether white meat or dark, Gamay’s fruit-forward character and gentle tannins complement both. The wine’s acidity cuts through rich gravies while its red berry notes echo the cranberry sauce.

Stuffing & Dressing: The herbal, earthy qualities in our Gamay mirror the sage, thyme, and herbs that season traditional stuffing. The wine’s structure stands up to sausage-based dressings while maintaining enough delicacy for lighter preparations.

Roasted Root Vegetables: The earthy notes in the wine find kinship with roasted carrots, parsnips, and squash. The wine’s acidity balances any sweetness in glazed or caramelized preparations.

Cranberry Dishes: Those bright cherry and raspberry notes in the wine create a beautiful harmony with cranberry sauce, whether jellied or freshly made with orange zest.

Green Bean Casserole: The wine’s lightness and acidity cut through the creaminess while its fruit notes complement the vegetables.

Serve it slightly chilled—around 55-60°F—to accentuate its refreshing qualities and make it even more food-friendly.

Celebrating with Arden

This Nouveau Day, we’re thrilled to collaborate with Arden in Portland, where the Flâneur team will be sharing our 2024 vintage alongside barrel samples of our 2025 Gamay, offering a rare chance to taste the evolution, to see how this grape continues to reveal itself through our terroir, and to celebrate the harvest with fellow wine lovers. To join us you can find tickets HERE.

There’s something profound about tasting a wine that was just picked weeks ago—it’s alive in a way that aged wines, for all their complexity, cannot replicate. Nouveau wines capture a moment in time, a snapshot of the vintage, the raw expression of place before time softens and transforms it.

The Spirit of Flâneur

As we gather to celebrate Nouveau Day, we’re reminded of why we chose our name. The flâneur—that leisurely wanderer of 19th century Paris—understood that the best discoveries come when we slow down, when we observe with curiosity rather than rushing toward a destination.

That same spirit animates our winemaking. We dry-farm organically. We allow native yeasts to guide fermentation. We craft wines that reflect place and vintage rather than impose a predetermined style. And we make wines like our Gamay Noir—wines that invite exploration, that reward attention, but that also simply delight when you’re looking for an easy, sophisticated glass to share.

This Nouveau Day, whether you’re joining us at Arden or opening a bottle at your own table, we invite you to wander through the flavors of our third Gamay vintage. Taste the volcanic soils of the Chehalem Mountains, the cool Pacific influence, the careful work of hands that tend these vines throughout the year.

Raise a glass to tradition, to terroir, to the joy of harvest. Le Nouveau est arrivé.

Only 30 cases of our 2024 La Belle Promenade Gamay Noir are left. Join us at Arden in Portland for Nouveau Day celebrations, or visit our Carlton Grain Elevator tasting room to experience our portfolio of estate wines.

2024 Harvest Notes

by Winemaker, Anthony Sereni

Flâneur Winemaker, Anthony Sereni

“The 2024 growing season began with bud break at our Flânerie Vineyard in early June, followed by a brief rain. Bud break at our La Belle Promenade Vineyard (LBP) occurred a little after mid-June. We had an excellent fruit set, with the rain event fortunately missing bud break at both sites. The following months brought good sun and heat accumulation, interspersed with light rain, which promoted nutrient mobility in the soil and kept the vines healthy during some heat events. Although high disease pressure was reported throughout the valley, our Director of Vineyards, Jaime Cantu, implemented a careful and effective spray program.

In early September, we paused harvest preparations to bottle most of our 2023 vintage. Once the wines were in bottle and shipped off-site for storage, we began cleaning tanks, hoses, sorting equipment, the press, and floors. Our first vineyard visits with the interns focused on teaching them fruit sampling and familiarizing them with the areas and blocks of our two sites. The crew seemed to enjoy the vineyard, though it involved a bit more walking than they anticipated. Our sites are steep in some areas! Sunscreen and wide-brim hats were essential on those days!

In an unexpected turn, our first ready-to-harvest fruit wasn’t for sparkling wine. Instead, it was some young vine Chardonnay from LBP. Young vines often ripen earlier than neighboring older vines, and I’m eager to see the character that these new Chardonnay blocks will bring. The Flânerie Chardonnay also ripened early, taking on an intriguing personality as the vines reach their sixth leaf. This wine has a noticeably different texture from the LBP Chardonnay, so I’ve been treating it slightly differently in the cellar to highlight the unique quality of this Ribbon Ridge site.

As fermentations began, the crew had less time to assist with fruit sampling, so I started waking up early to pull samples while the vineyard crew harvested. Those early mornings brought some breathtaking sunrises at LBP—a beautiful reminder to pause and appreciate the natural splendor of the site before heading back to the winery.

With wines in barrel and the cellar season on the horizon, I can undoubtably say this vintage is shaping into something truly special and I look forward to sharing the wines with you in the next few years.

My Favorite Ferments:
Block 23 is one of my favorite blocks of Pinot Noir from LBP. This year, it fermented in a tank named, “Abbi”, with about 30% whole clusters. It’s always a favorite, but the fermenter named, “Captain Cedar”, might be a little more special. This wooden fermenter held fruit from Blocks 21 and 22, also with about 30% whole cluster. The wine has great acidity, concentrated fruit, and a generous, thick texture. I can’t wait to blend with these barrels!

Special Shout Out:
This vintage was made possible thanks to the incredible help of our interns, Eli and Carson, and our stellar Cellar Assistant, Ellen. Their hard work, humor, and dedication through long hours were invaluable. And, of course, without the heart of our vineyard, there would be no wine. Huge thanks to Jaime Cantu, our Director of Vineyards, and Juan Corona, our Vineyard Assistant, for their expert stewardship, bringing our vines to the finish line in pristine condition, both in looks and taste!

Recommended Pairings:
– Carbonic Pinot Meunier
– La Belle Promenade Pinot Noir
– Cuvée Constantin Pinot Noir
Serves 4 people
time: 3.5 hours

Something magical and exciting happens when the earth & sea come together in perfect harmony; and when you are left with a bowl of murky, salty, spicy and fragrant broth to sop up with a chunk of crusty bread….what could be better for your soul?! This dish is deep, warm, richly spiced with an earthy quality that pairs best with the unabashedly fruit forward and cheerful nature of our Carbonic Pinot Meunier. Try it with our Cuvée Constantin or La Belle Promenade Pinot Noir if you are seeking something a little richer.

Clam, Shiitake, Chorizo Cinzano Stew & Garlic Bread
bottle of 2022 Flaneur wines Pinto Meunier

Ingredients:

Clam, Shiitake, Chorizo Cinzano Stew:

  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium red onion, 1/2 inch dice
  • 8oz shiitake mushrooms (remove hard part of stems)
  • ½ lbs. Cooked chorizo – thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup Cinzano Rosso Vermouth
  • 1.5 cups basic tomato sauce
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 24 little neck clams (scrubbed, rinsed)

Red Wine Garlic Bread:

  • 1 baguette
  • 1/4 cup dry red wine
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced or chopped
  • 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves

Directions:

Clam, Shiitake, Chorizo Cinzano Stew:

Step 1: On the stove, heat the olive oil in a heavy bottomed large pot until smoking.  Add the onions, chorizo and shiitakes. Lower heat to medium and cook until the onions are soft, 7-10 minutes.

Step 2: Add the Cinzano Rosso and bring to a boil, then add the tomato sauce and white wine and bring to a boil.

Step 3: Immediately add the clams and cover the pot. Cook until the clams are opened, about 6 minutes.  Check after 4 minutes, and then check every 1-2 minutes.  Once the clams are opened they are ready and you don’t want to overcook them.

Step 4: Remove from heat. Drizzle some extra virgin olive oil and chopped parsley over the top and serve immediately. Transfer to a deep platter or just serve this rustic beauty in the pot itself!

Red Wine Garlic Bread:

Step 1: Heat oven to 400*

Step 2: Slice the baguette as if you are making a sandwich

Step 3: Brush both halves with red wine and then olive oil

Step 4: Sprinkle the garlic and thyme

Step 5: Put the halves back together again and bake in the oven, unwrapped for 5 minutes.

Step 6: Cut into 4 inch pieces and serve warm.

Painting The Picture: Flâneur Wines’ Willamette Valley Chardonnay Program

Starting With The Land & The Hand

The magic of Willamette Valley Chardonnay lies in its ability to showcase both its terroir and the craftsmanship of its winemakers. At Flâneur Wines, this journey starts with our La Belle Promenade Vineyard and the skilled hands of our winemakers. Our La Belle Promenade Vineyard, located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, a sub region of the greater Willamette Valley AVA, is the source of fruit for each of our three distinctive Willamette Valley Chardonnays.

La belle Promenade Vineyard at sunset

The vineyard’s geological diversity, predominantly volcanic parent material, contributes to the unique profiles of our Willamette Valley Chardonnays. In the rocky sections, Chardonnays exhibit focus, energy, citrus tones, and brilliant acidity. Conversely, the more decomposed and rich soils toward the vineyard’s east and west produce Chardonnays with greater weight, richness, and floral tones. These variations allow us to craft a kaleidoscope of tastes, textures, and aromas, akin to an artist layering oils on a canvas. Each Willamette Valley Chardonnay in our portfolio—La Belle Promenade Chardonnay, Cuvée Constantin Chardonnay, and Bon Vivant Chardonnay—is intentionally crafted to portray a unique picture, each compelling and exciting.

La Belle Promenade Chardonnay, Willamette Valley

The La Belle Promenade Chardonnay is a unique portrait of the same vineyard each year. By design, it has the most symmetry, balancing the mineral, saline, and lemon-like tones of the rocky sections of the vineyard with just enough of the richness from the decomposed sections of soil. Consequently, this Willamette Valley Chardonnay consistently reflects the vineyard’s balance year after year.

The 2021 La Belle Promenade Chardonnay presents a lovely glistening light lemon core with a watery rim. Sweet and spicy on the nose, with elements of grilled cinnamon and sugar white peaches, crushed volcanic rock, dried thyme, and dried pineapple. Round and full on the palate, with balanced acidity levels and a fruit-forward and toasted hazelnut finish that completes the wine.

Cuvée Constantin Chardonnay, Willamette Valley

Like painting with thick oil paints layered on top to create deep textures and bold colors, the Cuvée Constantin Chardonnay has always been a feast for the senses. In the late afternoon light, our blocks of Chardonnay to the west are saturated. As a result, the skins thicken and are imbued with a golden kiss that produces notes of candle wax, honey, and graham. On their own, they can be full and powerful. After fermentation, we hunt for the barrels that show this character and blend back just enough acid and freshness from the surrounding blocks to fashion a wine that plays heavy on style. Additionally, a complex mix of French and Austrian oak is layered on top, just enough to make the richness of the wine stand out, but not so much as to become the dominant tone. Indeed, with a few years of age, this Willamette Valley Chardonnay always shows best.

A light lemon-gold core with a silvery rim presents nicely in the glass on the 2020 Constantine Chardonnay that is fermented in 25% new French and Austrian oak. A stunning nose of crushed volcanic rock, sweet spice, Meyer lemon curd, and marzipan play well together. The palate is more earthy and saline, with flavors of white wildflowers, sea breeze, and a hint of iron that hits the front palate.

Bon Vivant Chardonnay, Willamette Valley

The Bon Vivant Chardonnay, as its name implies, is in a class by itself. Each year, as we taste through our cellar, certain barrels rise to the top. It could be their sense of decadent power, or their graceful precision and minerality that draw us to those barrels. Consequently, each time we revisit these special barrels, the blurry image of the final composition begins to take form. Ultimately, in the end, it is our yearly masterstroke: our most complex and layered wine. With a full spectrum of ripe fruits, layers of floral aromas are gilded with the brilliant spice from new oak. Truly, the Bon Vivant is a true masterpiece of a Willamette Valley Chardonnay.

Selecting only the best barrels from the vintage, the 2020 Bon Vivant sports a gorgeous light, but moves to a medium lemon core with a silvery rim in the glass. Starting off with some crushed rock and flint minerality on the nose, it follows up with notes of grilled lemon, fresh white peach, warm allspice, and hints of cedary herbs. Elegant and refined on the palate, the lush mouthfeel pops with stone-fruit goodness and shades of white grapefruit citrus, ending with a toasty cinnamon aspect on the back palate. Highly recommended.

2020 Bon Vivant Chardonnay & Barrel Spiced Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients:

For The Crust:

  • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons ice water, as needed

For The Filling

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 petals from a star-anise pod
  • 1 whole clove
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom pods
  • ½ teaspoon whole black peppercorns
  • 1¾ cups pumpkin (homemade or a15-ounce can)
  • ¾ cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Directions:

Step 1: For the crust, in a large bowl, whisk flour and salt. Kneed in the butter until it is the size of peas then slowly add in water until the dough forms when squeezed.

Step 2: Transfer dough to a lightly floured counter. Take a palm-size chunk and use the heel of your hand to smear the dough across counter. Continue until all the dough has been smeared, then gather it all together, flatten into a disk, and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill for at least 1 hour and up to 2 days.

Step 3: After chilling, on a lightly floured counter, roll dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a 9-inch pie pan and fold the edges over and crimp. With a fork, lightly stab the dough all over then chill for at least 30 minutes.

Step 4: Heat oven to 425 degrees. Line the chilled crust with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake until lightly golden, 5 to 10 more minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool. Lower oven temperature to 325 degrees.

Step 5: Make the filling in a medium pot, combine the cream, cinnamon stick, star anise petals, clove, fresh ginger, cardamom and peppercorns, and bring to a light simmer. Remove from heat, cover, and let steep for 1 hour. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl.

Step 6: Whisk in pumpkin, brown sugar, eggs, yolks, rum, ground ginger, salt and nutmeg. Pour into par-baked shell, transfer to a baking sheet, and bake until crust is golden and center is slightly wiggly, 50 to 60 minutes. Cool completely before serving.

Soy & Cider Brined Pork Loin with Ginger Sweet Potatoes

Paired with Cuvée Constantin Pinot Noir

“If this dish isn’t AUTUMNAL, I am not quite sure what is. For heaven’s sake, the side dish is the color ORANGE! Easy to prepare, pleasing to the eyes and full of holiday season character, this pairing will wow your guests! This dish, although “meat and potatoes”, doesn’t require a very big and tannic wine. The wine I feel suits this dish best is our 2019 Cuvée Constantin Pinot Noir which presents cherry flavors that take on cinnamon and rose petal with tannins that are soft, but still boast a grip. This recipe pairing is savory, sweet, spiced…. as glorious as that pumpkin spiced chai latte you wait all year for. Pro tip, brining the pork overnight is THE key to success here.”

Recipe ingredients and Cuvee Constantin Pinot Noir

Ingredients:

For the Brine:

  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp peppercorn
  • 1/4 cup water
  • One 2-pound pork tenderloin (or porkchops)

For the Ginger Sweet Potatoes

  • 1.5 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp minced, fresh ginger
  • 4 sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

Step 1: Combine all ingredients for the brine in a ziplock bag and marinate pork overnight, or at least 4 hours.

Step 2: Remove from brine, pat dry. Sear the pork loin in an oven safe heavy bottomed pan on all sides. Then place in a 350* oven for about 10 minutes or until the internal temp reaches 150*.

Step 3: While the pork is in the oven, prepare the sweet potatoes… Place cream and ginger for the sweet potatoes in a saucepan over low heat. Reduce to one cup.

Step 4: In another pot, place sweet potato and garlic and cover with water. Simmer for roughly 20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.

Step 5: Drain the water off and place potatoes in a food processor and purée, adding the cream and butter. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 6: Once the pork is done, let rest on counter, covered, for 10 minutes. Slice into one inch medallions next to ginger sweet potatoes and sautéed veggies of your choice.

The 2020 Cuvée Constantin Chardonnay offers intriguing aromas of lemon meringue, lime rind, pear, and wool, with hints of caramelized coconut flakes and almond flour. Flavors of lemon curd, quince, ripe pear and yellow apples remind us of the orchard fruits that once called the hillsides of La Belle Promenade home. Beautifully complex texture and fresh acidity have us excited to pair it with this season’s fresh fall flavors and cooling temperatures.
